Connally Memorial Medical Center’s F. R. Wade Krause, M.D. has successfully completed the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) Part II Oral Certifying Examination.
The ABOS certification process consists of two parts. The first part is a computer-based test, which evaluates orthopaedic surgeons’ knowledge of general orthopaedics and application of this knowledge to clinical scenarios. Part 1 is taken after completion of an accredited orthopaedic residency. The second part of the exam is taken after the physician has been in practice for twenty consecutive months. The purpose of the second part of the exam is to evaluate the physician’s clinical competence. This is done through a credentialing process and an oral examination. The physician must complete an operative case list over a six month period, which is evaluated by the board. Ten of these cases are selected and the physician must “present” these cases to the board during the exam. The board evaluates specific skills during the exam, including data gathering, interpretive skills, diagnosis, treatment, technical skills, outcomes, and applied knowledge. Candidates who pass the examination are certified and are Diplomates of the ABOS. They receive a certificate that is valid for ten years. Every ten years thereafter, the physician must take a re-certification exam consisting of either a written or oral exam.
Dr. Krause grew up in Three Rivers, Texas. He attended college at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio, and completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at The Fort Worth Affiliated Hospital’s Orthpaedic Residency Program in Fort Worth, Texas. His Sports Fellowship was completed at Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas, Greenville, SC, under the guidance of Dr. Richard Hawkins, a world renowned shoulder surgeon and former team physician for the Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos.
Dr. Krause has just celebrated the second anniversary of his solo practice, South Texas Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, located at 495 10th Street Suite 104 in Floresville, just in front of CMMC. Dr. Krause stated, “I really enjoy living in Wilson County. Providing orthopaedic care for the surrounding communities, including the student athletes at several local schools, is truly rewarding.”
